After one year and a successful workshop, Common Ground decided to host another building workshop of the great Ornament & Crime eurorack-module, a collaborative open-source project by mxmxmx, Patrick Dowling, and Tim Churches. The module is available as DIY-only and all the parts on the board are (reasonably-sized) SMD so this is a great change to start learning those SMD-soldering skills. The workshop is organized in agreement with mxmxmx, the original designer.
Module Description:
Ornament & Crime is a multi-purpose control module designed to produce precision control voltages for various needs. It’s based on an ARM-microcontroller and is completely open source which is an open call for all the hacker-minded individuals to tweak and expand it’s functionality even further. This has already resulted in a widely extended firmware for the module that extends it’s functionality way beyond it’s original use. With the extended firmware, called Ornaments and Crimes, installed, the module can be used as: * a quantizing analogue shift register (original functionality), * a quad (voltage-controlled) envelope generator, * a quad wavetable LFO, * a quad quantizer, and many more. The whole list of different functionalities, and the full build documentation, can be found from the project home page: http://ornament-and-cri.me/
About the workshop:
The workshop is going to be held in the evening of Wednesday the 13th December, starting 7pm. After a short introduction, the participants go through the build in their own individual pace, instructed by the workshop guide Otto. For the experienced DIYer, it’s possible to finish the module in around 3 hours, and for a more relaxed pace, the whole evening should be reserved. The workshop is going to go on until midnight. If an attendee does not have the time to finish the unit in one go, it’s possible to continue the build another day using the Common Ground workbenches.
The maximum number of participants for the workshop is 8, due to available tools / workspace, so make sure to reserve a spot soon enough!
Price: The price of the workshop is 190€ and participants are asked to pay in advance (no ‘Cash on Pickup’ payment option). This gets you a full Ornament and Crime Kit with all the necessary components, the PCB and a Common Ground Ornament & Crime panel. A portion of the earnings is going back to mr. mxmxmx for research and development.
Looking forward to have you all in the workshop!
