Fantastic Voyage is a workshop series presented by Vernon D Hill and explores the techniques and tools used to create the sound of Detroit focusing on the 80’s, 90’s and the present, with a mini concert that concludes the workshop.
If you you’re a fan of Tribe Called Quest , J Dilla, Daft Punk or Roger Troutman of Zapp!! Or just love playing synths you shouldn’t miss this event.
Vernon’s background starts with the Motown sound as a keyboardist for the Dramatics, the Contours and Temptations. After residing in Europe and working at BMG as a producer for Mike Marshall of the Luniz and Joy Delalane for a few years he returned to the US as a sound engineer and producer and worked with
J Dilla , Slum Village, Dwele and Phifie Dawg, D12 and The Roots to name a few of the artists which helped him gain his knowledge and experience.
The workshop will focus on these topics:
– The Moog and its role in the Detroit sound.
– The Akai MPC and it’s role in yesterdays and todays music .
– Techniques for sampling with vinyl, floppy disks and loops.
– Creative use of a Talk Box together with a all these elements.
This is a hands-on-workshop, Vernon will show all these techniques and different machines by using the original masters and source material from J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest from his personal archive. You can ask him anything!
