This is the 1st part of the workshop about sound synthesis. The second part which will cover more advanced topics will take place on Monday 17th December and we strongly recommend you to attend both parts for a complete introduction!
This workshop will teach the basic theoretical groundwork for sound synthesis. The information in this workshop can be applied to all types of synths – hardware or software, modular or not modular. No prior knowledge or experience with synthesis is required. The principles will be demonstrated on a synth, the Roland Gaia, which is a good learning instrument. The workshop will begin with a very basic introduction to acoustics, the overtone series, the behavior of sound waves and the methods electronic instruments used to create them. Then some examples of questions that will be answered are: What is an oscillator? What are the main waveform shapes and what are their properties? What is a filter? What is additive synthesis? How would you synthesize something that sounds like a violin, or like a wood block? How do we make synth sounds that are interesting and “alive”? All of these topics and more will be covered in the workshop.
All materials are included in the workshop fee.
Please let us know if you can’t make it max. 24 hours before the workshop, otherwise, we can’t reimburse you.
